Oldest living WWII Veteran honored on his 100th birthday

Family, friends and community honored Veteran Robert Reece on his 100th birthday in Edmonton June 16th. He is the oldest living WWII veteran. Jody Curry decorated his 100-year-old Model T for Bob to arrive in at the celebration. After a trip around the square, Bob walked a red carpet that had been laid on the sidewalk in the courtyard on the Public Square.

Birds of Kentucky: Red-headed Woodpecker

According to the All About Birds entry on them, "The Red-headed Woodpecker is one of only four North American woodpeckers known to store food, and it is the only one known to cover the stored food with wood or bark. It hides insects and seeds in cracks in wood, under bark, in fenceposts, and under roof shingles. Grasshoppers are regularly stored alive, but wedged into crevices so tightly that they cannot escape."

Suspension bridge out at Red River Gorge

The suspension bridge on the Sheltowee Trace Trail at Red River Gorge remains an ongoing repair project. According to news reports, the bridge was destroyed by a falling tree back in March.

Elderberry in full bloom, another angle

Barn Owls making a home at HGR

Homeplace on Green River is proudly hosting a pair of nesting Barn Owls. The photo above was taken a few months ago when the owls found their way into one of the events barns at HGR.

At right, an ad for Davis Hardware Co., June 14, 1933, advertising plumbing supplies to connect to the new city water system. (This ad also appeared in the paper a week earlier, the day the water came to town.)
