Casey County teachers honored for Excellence in Teaching

Teachers from Casey County honored by the CU Excellence in Teaching program are: Lesley Wesley, Jones Park Elementary; Marlene Atwood, Casey County Middle School; and Tara Luster, Casey County High School.

Lesley Wesley of Waynesburg, KY is a 1993 graduate of Casey County High School who has taught kindergarten at Jones Park Elementary since 1999. She received an elementary education degree from Lindsey Wilson College in 1998 and a Rank 1 from Eastern Kentucky University in 2003. She is married to James Wesley, and they have one child, Conner.

Marlene Atwood of Liberty, KY has taught sixth-grade social studies at Casey County Middle School since 2020. She previously taught fifth grade reading, spelling and social studies at Liberty Elementary School from 1992 to 1993 and fifth grade at Garrett Elementary School from 1993 to 2005. She also taught fifth grade (math and social studies) at Jones Park Elementary School. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Lindsey Wilson College in 1990 and a Master of Arts from Eastern Kentucky University in 1998. She is a 1986 graduate of Casey County High School.

Tara Luster of Liberty, has taught grades 9-12 at Casey County High School since 2020. She previously taught at Danville Christian Academy and seventh and eighth grade at Casey County Middle School from 2011 to 2020. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from Eastern Kentucky University in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Education from EKU in 2016. She is married to Billy Luster, and they have five children: Laken, Brookyln, Finn, Cloie and Landon.

Traffic adjustments in Columbia

Tutt Street was just one example of street adjustments having to be made on Wednesday. It was stop, direct, wait, then go through or go around. The heavily traveled street is getting a smooth new surface.

Adair teachers honored by CU Excellence in Teaching

Teachers from Adair County honored by the CU Excellence in Teaching program are: Sydney Humphress, Adair County Elementary School; Katie Cowan, Adair County Middle School; and Brittany Smith, Adair County High School.

Sydney Humphress, of Columbia, has taught fifth grade math and science at Adair County Elementary School since 2001. She received a Bachelor's in Elementary Education from UK in 2017 and her master's in teacher leader (K-12) from University of the Cumberlands in 2019. She is a 2014 graduate of Adair County High School, married to Jordan Humphress.

Katie Cowan, of Columbia, has taught sixth grade social studies at Adair County Middle School since August 2020. She received a bachelor's from Lindsey Wilson College in 2019 and is a 2013 graduate of Adair County High School. She is married to Tyler Cowan, and they have one child, Bodie.

Brittany Smith, of Columbia, has taught agriculture (grades 9-12) at Adair County High School since August 2021. She received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education from UK in 2008 and a Master of Science in Career and Technical Education from UK in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Teaching (Science and Social Studies) from Morehead State University in 2012. She is the daughter of Sandy and Danny Wilkinson, married to Kyle Smith, and they have one child, Abby Lou.

IMAGINE! Youth Theatre presents Cinderella: Youth Edition

Jenna Claywell (left) plays Cinderella in the IMAGINE! Youth Theatre production of Cinderella: Youth Edition!, opening this weekend in V.P. Henry Auditorium. Bowen Furkin (right) plays Prince Christopher. This special edition of the timeless, magical fairy tale includes all of the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm, and elegance.

Winners of 2023 KDA Poster and Essay Contest

Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles announced the winners of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's annual Poster and Essay Contest during an awards ceremony Saturday at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville. The theme of the contest, "Kentucky Agriculture is Everywhere," reflected on the important role agriculture has in our world. Pictured with the winners are, 2023 Miss Kentucky Mallory Hudson, on the far left, and Commissioner Quarles, at right.

Snowberry Clearwing Moth

Veronica writes, "I saw this giant moth in my garden. I took its picture so I could identify it later. It appears to be a snowberry clearwing moth, with a common name of Hummingbird Moth or Flying Lobster Moth. Which if you look at his shape, I get the lobster name.

He just hung out there on my green beans while I harvested some vegetables. very striking and odd. Definitely uses mimicking to look like bees."

ACHS student receives Doug Reece Scholarship

Bailey Watts was awarded the Doug Reece Memorial Scholarship for having the highest application score out of her 2023 class in the Rogers Scholars Program. Watts is an incoming junior at Adair County High School for 2023-2024.
