Grapes Of Cane Valley

2023-08-25 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
Robert writes, "The late April cold snap played havoc on my small vineyard. Only a few plants produced any meaningful amount of grapes. Fortunately, of these, two were my favorite variety; better tasting, ripens earlier and more even ripening of the cluster.

This favorite variety is supposed to be Vanessa, as best I can remember. The "mother" plant I grew these plants from, as cuttings, is probably over two decades old. I bought Mother from a seed catalog and it was supposed to be seedless, but they're not.

These in my opinion are superior as well to my other variety, Concord. They winter better, are somewhat naturally resistant to fungus, mold and mildew issues that plague grape growing in Kentucky...so no chemical spraying needed (or desired). They remain purely organic! I guess it will have to remain a mystery what the variety truly is."
