Some of the Cooks at the Circle R

2023-10-24 - Columbia, KY - Photo from Harper Family Collection.
A scrapbook display from the Harper Family includes photos of Mrs. Dowell, Mrs. Doris Johnson, and another cook at the Circle R Restaurant. You can see the display now at the Trabue Russell House. It provides a unique look back at a Columbia institution, still missed by many. Mrs. Johnson's son, Robert, says, "My mother worked at the restaurant for many years as a cook, and I would like to think that she played a small role in the near legendary status of the great food and service that could be enjoyed at the Circle R."

Note: If you recognize the third person in this photo, please let us know and we'll add it.

Keeping up with changes at the Courthouse

2023-10-24 - Photo from family collection.
Lonnie Collins writes: I found this old photo in my Collins family album from an old Kentucky Explorer issue. The photo is dated ca. 1900.

I've been keeping up on the Columbia Magazine articles. My side of the Collins family were longtime residents of Adair County and Glensville/Glensfork since the early 1800s. Many are at rest in Grant cemetery and Ragan cemetery.
Thanks, Lonnie Collins, Milan Michigan

Drive carefully on Hurt Street in Columbia

2023-10-23 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The accident has been cleared away but there is evidence the utility pole will be needing some repairs. Drive carefully at the bottom of Hurt Street when passing by it. Hurt is a heavily used short cut connector street from the top of Jamestown Hill toward the Public Square. It's easy to gain speed going down the big hill and not be prepared for the sharp curve by this utility pole before Hurt connects with Guardian Street.
