Scenic Russell County, KY - downtown Creelsboro
2024-07-10 - Russell County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. The tiny town of Creelsboro on the Cumberland River, home of the natural Rock House, was a popular spot for food and walks and water over the holiday. Kathy Campbell's Creelsboro Store was packed. The historical marker across from her store reads, "Laid out, 1809, named for Elijah and Elza Creel, pioneers whose son, Reuben, served US in Mexico; his son Enrique served Mexico in US. An interpreter for Gen. W. T. Ward during Mexican War, Reuben stayed on there, was appointed US Consul, 1863, by Pres. Lincoln. Enrique was Governor of Chihuahua State, 1903 to 1906 and Mexican Ambassador to US, 1906 to 1909."

A reminder to slow down this time of year
2024-07-09 - Highway 55 South, well north of Columbia - Photo by Pen. A reminder to drivers that there's lots of people using the roads this time of year, and it's always good to leave room for the unexpected. Sometimes, just when you think it's safe to pass a slow-moving farm vehicle, the whole convoy will have to change lanes for a stalled log truck undergoing emergency repairs.
