Black History Month proclaimed in City of Columbia

2024-02-20 - Columbia, KY - Photo from City Hall.
Black History Month has been proclaimed in Columbia by proclamation of Columbia Mayor Pamela Hoots. The proclamation says, in part, "Whereas, Black History Month recognizes the achievements made annually by African Americans and a time for recognizing their role in history."

The proclamation was done in conjunction with the second Annual Black History Month 5K and 1 mile walk being sponsored by The Weathers Foundation in Danville, Kentucky. Proceeds from that event will benefit the Agape House PSC, a non-profit Pregnancy Resource Center, located in Columbia. Pictured are: Sharon Payne, Joanne Payne, Shelia Payne, Mayor Hoots and Phyllis Payne.

Kentucky Color: Nobody Home

2024-02-20 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
Billy Joe writes, "I bet this old American beech has been a home or a hideout for hundreds, if not thousands, of squirrels, raccoons, possums and more, over the last hundred or so years! However, I knocked and no one answered the door. So I assume there was nobody home."

Landscape Photography: Adding the Human Element #5

2024-02-20 - Mesa Arch, Canyonlands National Park, Utah - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
Robert writes, "I'm always on the lookout for interesting "street" type photography; even in crowded National Parks. I like the human element activity in this photo a lot...and since it's near impossible to capture beautiful landscapes without other visitors to the park, in my opinion, adding people into the composition sometimes can add more appeal, causing the casual observer to take a longer look at the photo. Pic taken October 2022."

Scenic Kentucky: A step back in time

2024-02-20 - Christian Co., KY - Photo by Pen.
The front porch of the Simply Rustic store in Crofton, KY, lit by the morning sun, reminded me of country stores in Sulphur Well and Portland, among others. The vintage store is on Main Street, which doesn't really seem to be the main street anymore, with most of the commerce happening around the corner on Highway 41.
