Birds of Kentucky: Cooper's Hawk 2024-05-21 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen. I saw this hawk flash in front of my car to land on something in a nearby yard. I stopped the car to grab a photo. I'm not sure if he was protecting the catch from me or from another hawk overhead, but the wing spread to pretect what they've caught is called "mantling". Columbia Magazine's Senior Consulting Buteologist, who assisted with the ID, says this could be a juvenile, based on the eye color. (He also says Cooper's Hawks are accipiters, not buteos.) Travel: Lookout Point on the Moki Dugway 2024-05-21 - Utah - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking. Robert writes, "From this elevated view along Highway 261, we are on the gravel section of the highway known as the Moki Dugway. The scenery is spectacular! The gravel road on the left side of the image is the 17-mile loop that goes through Valley of the Gods...which we had just completed upon leaving Monument Valley. To cap off those two adventures, this--Highway 261, and specifically the Moki Dugway--was added to the itinerary as well. The blacktop road, center of the image, climbs the cliff face we're on by winding upwards through numerous switchbacks, then turning into 3 miles of gravel (Moki Dugway). It returns back to blacktop after ascending to the top. A portion of the gravel switchback is visible near the rock structures (left, bottom third) in the picture.
