Threat caused Betty's OK Country Cooking to close early

Betty's OK Country Cooking in Columbia was cleared inside and outside with a Kentucky State Police bomb dog Sunday afternoon. Columbia Police Department and Adair County Sheriff's Office responded along with the Fire and Gas Departments. We will print details as soon as a police report comes in from the investigating agency.

Robert writes, "I returned after a few days to check on the status of the spring colors, and it appears the field of purple nettles are near peak. For this round I was dealt a sky full of drama and no harsh sunlight...proper elements for my kind of photography!"

Russell Compton and Cora Belle Compton Hyden

Leslie Lindsay, a writer with ties to Adair Co., shares this old photo, given to her by her father, that she thinks dates to the 1930s. The photo was taken at the home of either Bert or Russell:
  • Left: (Lee) Russell Compton b. 1896
  • Middle: Cora Bell Compton Hyden (moved to Springfield, MO in 1920)
  • Right: Unknown; believed to be (Henry) Burton "Bert" Compton, b.1903 (son of Louvenia Carp Coomer Compton and George H. Compton).
Leslie writes, "If you happen to have a guess on the dates or locations of these photos, please let me know. I plan to be in Adair County April 8-10 for additional research, and perhaps to find the (remains) of any homes where my ancestors may have resided."

Scenic Kentucky: Foggy morning in Shelbyville

A foggy spring morning on the Sixth Street plaza in downtown Shelbyville. You can see a somewhat CGI-modified version of Sixth Street in the trailer for upcoming movie Wildcat, starring Laura Linney, Maya Hawke, and Philip Ettinger, which was partly filmed in Kentucky in winter 2023.
