Scenic Adair County - Smoke

2024-05-21 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Near the crossroads in Knifley, I spotted this pretty tree which I believe is called a "Smoke Tree." It may also be called a white Fringe tree. - LW

Cute little duck family and dead fish pieces

2024-05-21 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Anita Rees.
Anita writes, "I'm posting this happy pic of a duck family seen at Mt Carmel boat ramp yesterday, instead of disgusting photos of all the dead fish.

I don't fish, so not sure of the etiquette for cleaning them and disposal of their parts, but I'll bet it's not dumping them on the banks at a public boat ramp."

Primary Election Day 2024 closes quietly

2024-05-21 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Primary day 2024 was very light at one Adair County location. Two precincts - West and South Columbia - showed only around 150 votes on the machine counters in the last half hour of voting. Good training, however, for the November election.

Birds of Kentucky: Cooper's Hawk

2024-05-21 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
I saw this hawk flash in front of my car to land on something in a nearby yard. I stopped the car to grab a photo. I'm not sure if he was protecting the catch from me or from another hawk overhead, but the wing spread to pretect what they've caught is called "mantling".

Columbia Magazine's Senior Consulting Buteologist, who assisted with the ID, says this could be a juvenile, based on the eye color. (He also says Cooper's Hawks are accipiters, not buteos.)
