A reminder of home

2026-02-03 - San Bernardino Co., CA - Photo courtesy Billy Joe Fudge.
Billy Joe writes, "At that time the prison had their own dairy herd to keep some of the minimum security prisoners busy. Because of escalating land values and maybe even changes in rules about prison labor in California, they eventually ceased the program and sold much of the land. Back then, seeing the cows made me a little homesick for Kentucky and my own dairy herd!"

Fortress of Solitude

2026-02-03 - Fairplay, KY - Photo by Veronica Arnold.
Veronica writes, "Unsure if Superman will visit, but this little one isn't ready to part with the ice fortress she built during Winter Storm Fern. Fortress of Solitude was not built in a day! Just like Rome! But with the whole family pitching in we got it done. Unsure what's more important, building the fort or building the memories?"

Birds of Kentucky: Great Crested Flycatcher

2026-02-03 - Polk Co., FL - Photo by Pen.
Great Crested Flycatchers are common in summer months in Kentucky, although they tend to winter much farther south. This one was spotted in Florida back in January.

Wikipedia says, "Despite the 'flycatcher' of the bird's name, flies, along with spiders, make up only a small percentage of its diet; it prefers prey such as butterflies, moths, beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, and bees and wasps.

Snow and ice fortress complete with a window

2026-02-02 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by April Yurcevic Shepperd.
A play place was discovered by April Shepperd over the weekend in the Save-a-Lot parking lot on the corner on Burkesville and Guardian Streets in downtown Columbia. Neighborhood engineers created a fortress, complete with a window/skylight, from the huge pile of icy snow that had been pushed away so shoppers could get into the parking lot. Looking inside, you can also see the concrete wall art done by Vonnie Kolbenschlag a few years ago.

If anyone can share the names and/or pictures of the building in progress, Columbia Magazine would happily add them here with April's story. Thanks to all for the smiles!
