Life in the Holler: It's all in one's perspective

2014-03-09 - Topside, The Holler, Old Clearsprings Road, Ozark, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
The older I get the more I realize life and happiness is all about perspective.
Some folks look at this picture and the first thing that comes to their mind is the fact that someone had no respect for the owners (us) or their property. I look at the sign and think well somebody had a tight grouping. It is all about how you chose to look at life. My life is always half full, never half empty. - Shamarie Claiborne

Cathy Tucker: An eloquent (but now angry) voice for Knifley

2014-03-09 - Knifley Fire Department, 6130 Elkhorn Road, Knifley, KY 42753 - Photo by Ed Waggener. Kathy Tucker was a tower of strength, an icon for the spirit of rebuilding an even better Knifley in the minutes, hours, and days immediately following the Knifley pipeline explosion. Above, with her grandson at her side, she gave an interview; one of many interviews she freely gave. It was a time of great community, with only kind words for the representatives of Columbia Gas Company, the company now being heavily faulted for the conditions which allowed the nightmare to occur. In Knifley, the epic of the heroic effort of the local fire department, local officials, and area first responders is continuing to grow. But at this much ballybooed "press conference" on Monday, February 13, 2014, signs were evident that the community could soon be on its own. Federal help came in the form of a gift of "Flag which had flown over he U.S. Capitol," for the local fire department, and a reminder of past Federal help for small fire departments such as Knifley. No mention of strengthening regulations so that a disaster such as this one would not happen again or of additional Federal aid for the people of Knifley to regain their lives. Two weeks later, Kathy Tucker has chronicled the story of the nightmare which visited her families life, and the end of the honeymoon with Columbia Gas had come. Now, she says, a lawsuit may be the only way open to obtain an equitable compensation for what she and her family have gone though. - EW
