Mayoral candidate at Sportsmen's fish fry with No. 1 supporter
2014-03-16 - 411 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Columbia City Council Member June Parson is the only announced candidate for Mayor, and she won't be subject to the Tuesday, May 20, 2014, primary election. But she was campaigning at the big Adair Sportmen Club Fish Fry, Stump Speaking and Auction last night her Number 1 supporter, son Jason Hawkins, one of Adair County's most popular men. She knows how lucky she is, "I know how important he is," she said. "He's the last person I would want to be running against," she said, "even if he weren't my son. Jason is a long time employee of Lindsey Wilson College and big supporter of Downtown Columbia.

Baby daffodils
2014-03-16 - Photo by Linda Waggener. Daffodils are my favorite flower, right before lilacs so I couldn't resist stopping on South Monroe Street in Columbia behind Columbia United Methodist Church to take this photo. These are baby daffodils and were shining brightly in the Saturday sunshine. They haven't been tested yet to see if they also have that incredible sweet, gentle aroma of the old fashioned ones, but the look is perfect. Whoever planted them has my thanks!

Life in the Holler: And the cow jumped over the moon
2014-03-16 - Topside, The Holler, Old Clearsprings Road, Ozark, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne. Chris Cowan out in Milltown, who is a great guy, allowed me to take a few shots at his house last night. Our children had been riding four wheelers and I was picking up Dusty at just the perfect time. Of course he said "sure, help your self." This frame said everything to me about farm life. The equipment, the fencing and, in the light of the full moon, took me back 40 years in my mind to what I thought a farm should look like in the song, "Hey Diddle, Diddle" by Mother Goose, when Jimmy Harper would sing it to me. All the elements were there, you can't see the little Blue Healer running around my feet, the full moon, the laughter from the kids... I was just waiting for the cow to jump over the moon!

Academics, health & safety priorities on ACHS campus
2014-03-16 - ACES, 870 Indian DR, Columbia, Ky - Photo by Ed Waggener. Leaving a lasting impression: Often it's subtle cues which impact the impression visitors get. We had that experience at Corbin High School. It's famous for its academic accomplishments, but only one in our party knew of it. On three different occasions we announced to our party that we'd seen a banner that Corbin, academically is on the 94 percentile! Yesterday, visitors from and to Adair County for a wonderful day and venue for baseball, could leave seeing that the district also puts top priority on academics, and, on the sign below, that health is important. Had they glanced over to Adair County Elementary and seen the huge 870 letters on the building, they might know how important public safety is to the district; they probably wouldn't have realized how much money that is saving a cash strapped 911 behind the scenes. Training dispatchers to get to buildings without proper signage is expensive at best, highly risky at worse. - ED WAGGENER

Election 2014: Mark Selby for Adair County Jailer
2014-03-16 - Columbia, KY - Photo Campaign Photo.
Make a difference this May and vote for the one who will make a difference: Mark Selby Republican Candidate for Adair County Jailer
To the voters of Adair County
I would like to thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself as your Republican Candidate for Adair County Jailer. I have been working in corrections for over 16 years. I began at a minimum security institution; at first I was not sure that I would like the job. I had always believed that prisoners were behind bars but at this institution 320 inmates were walking around with no bars and no fences. It took some time to get used to, but as I learned more and gained more experience I really enjoyed the job. I joined the Special Weapon and Tactics Team known as the Rapid Response Team. They specialized in riots, disturbances, and the mass movement of inmates by non-lethal means. I was moved to our super max facility and for the next 3 years I received excellent training in handling a variety of situations. I began to understand people and how they respond in confinement. I transferred to Lieber Correctional institution, a maximum security prison holding around 1500 inmates, including the state's only death row inmates. After being there for 15 months I was awarded the officer of the year award and was promoted to corporal, and within 6 months I went on to become sergeant.
That post required me to supervise both death row and two lock-up units. I joined the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) which is the agency's swat team. We specialized in handling hostage and life threatening situations by using lethal force if necessary.
My family and I moved to Columbia and I've been working as a deputy at the Adair
County Regional Jail for the last 3 years. I have seen the needs at the jail and I firmly believe that the next jailer should have the hands on experience to do the Job.
I would like to make a difference in Adair County and make some changes in how things are conducted. As your jailer I will:
- Provide more training for the deputies, to assist them in handling situations in a safe and professional manner
- Be firm, fair and consistent with both staff and inmates
- Always work for the betterment of the residents of Adair County
- Work along with the judges, magistrates, and directors
- Use inmate labor as much as possible in order to save tax payers money
- Teach inmates a skill instead of paying for them to watch television and sleep
- Work with our volunteers and to assist them in meeting the needs of the inmates
- Provide a stable foundation for the residents of Adair County Jail to rebuild their lives and not to become repeat offenders.
My wife and I have been married 18 years and we have 4 children. We attend Great Oaks Ministry in Knifley. I also manage Simple Truth Ministries our Family's worship band. I believe in strong Christian morals and stand on my faith in Jesus Christ.
Over the years that I have visited and lived in Adair County, I have made many lifelong friends. In 2011 the opportunity presented itself to move here and since this was a place I believed would benefit my family we uprooted and came here. It has proven to be a great move as we live alongside some great friends and in a great community. I ask that the residents of Adair County give me the opportunity to use my experience and knowledge to serve you in return. Make a difference this May and vote for the one who will make a difference.
Vote for Mark Selby
Paid for by the candidate, Mark Selby
