Campbellsville, KY Main Street - Ready for the 4th of July
2015-06-25 - Main Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo CM staff photo. Bright Red, White, and Blue American Flags line Campbellsville's Main Street above what appears to be a solid line of hanging flowers. City works were out in force today, touching up traffic stripes on the well marked Avenue, and many private businesses, seemingly caught up in the spirit on this beautiful June day, were doing their part to make the community sparkle. The scene is looking west, toward Green County.

KY Afield Outdoors: Historic Bourbon Furnace
2015-06-25 - Bath Co., KY - Photo by Lee McClellan. Historic Bourbon Furnace stands beside Slate Creek and provided cannonballs to Andrew Jackson for use in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. The park surrounding this furnace provides an excellent access spot for floats on Slate Creek. Paddlers will enjoy excellent fishing for smallmouth and rock bass as well as incredible vistas driving to the access points on the stream.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Making it great with a little help from my friends
2015-06-25 - Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Thanks to some great friends and the wonderful little lady of the house I was able to have a five minute breakfast, with a two minute clean up. And it was good. Thanks to Sue Humphress, the pickled egg was ready to eat. The color is from the beet she uses in her 60-egg recipe - she may have used store bought eggs - but that's OK. Linda brought in the juicy and full-of-taste red ripe tomato and the cuke from Taylor County, obtained on her way home from work. The zucchini, summer squash, and fresh onion pickles and the asparagus spear are from a Care Package delivered to us by the Angel of McKinley Lane, my wonderful niece, Mitzi Bault, who also shared a story of historic import, of the most powerful potato gun ever, invented by Blake Cowan. Now that beet colored egg . . . it comes with more provenance than Sue Humphress may have given me the right to tell. (She says that overindulgence made some gassy, so they had huge laughs as one after another said "The dog did it.') Pickled eggs are favorites of her Buskirk Hollow Clan from Pike County, who made a pilgrimage to Cane Valley a few days to visit Sue and her Adair County born, husband Billy. She always makes makes a jar of five dozen of the delicacies a few days before the Clan arrives. Won't give away her recipe, just the coloring agent: Beets. And, oh yes: The idea of cucumbers for breakfast? Never thought of cucumbers at that time of day until Pen came home from a trip to Hawaii and prepared an omelet island style, with a side of sliced cucumbers. Vinegar is the seasoning. It was great. The Asparagus spear, eaten raw and seasoned with sea salt, was inspired by an episode of Psyche.> Supposed to be healthy, they said. - EW

Stream project w/Turning lanes: Day 28/14 to go
2015-06-24 - Campbellsville Street at Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo ColumbiaMagazine.com photo. It's in the home stretch near the end of the Day 28 of the closure. Construction vehicles can now cross the completed culvert in the right of the photo. A turn lane to exit Campbellsville Street for northbound traffic onto Fairground Street is being added in the right side of the frame. A second turning lane for northbound traffiic leaving Fairground Street is being added, too, thanks to an outright gift of right of way by Columbia Manufacturer Rob Wilkerson, with help from community leader Junior Stotts. In the right hand side of the photo, the last of the Open Ditch is being covered, and a drain and new culvert will carry water from the lot to the new open waterway on the west side of the road. Already, Mr. Wilkerson said, he's getting word that property improvements will be being made by others on Campbellsville Street. The finish day is weather dependent, but the addition of the turning lanes is expected on the same time frame as the original project. - EW
