T.J. Regional Health and T.J. Health Columbia, CEO Bud Wethington, was the key note speaker for the Columbia/Adair County May luncheon meeting at Anderson's Pizzaria on Tuesday, May 10, 2016. Above, he's being interviewed for a newscast on WAIN radio. Mr. Wethington outlined the partnership he sees for the the parent organization and the people of Adair County, and outlined the economic impact T.J. will have on the Adair County economy, which, he said, can really prosper only with the support of the people of Adair County. Earlier in the day, a highly successful open house and Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting drew a large, enthusiastic crowd which was indicative of how the partnership is working now.

Coburg business interests keep close eye on Sunday sales

Melissa Moore and Albert Cundiff listened carefully as Sunday Sales were discussed in last night's Adair Fiscal Court meeting. The first reading for Adair County's Alcoholic Beverage Sales Ordinance does not have Sunday sales, which Moore, the owner of A & M Trading post in Coburg, favors. During the meeting, John Thomas, owner of Anderson's Pizza, addressed the issue, saying he needs Sunday sales for his restaurant. He said he thinks the ABC ordinance for the City of Columbia will include Sunday sales. Thomas said that if the county should, on final reading, omit Sunday sales, he will asked to be annexed into the City, a maneuver also available to any business in the county.

'Very capable treasurer' for over nine years, resigns

2016-05-11 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Adair County Judge Executive Michael Lee Stephens announced, with regret, the resignation of Barry Corbin, center above who has served as Adair County Treasurer for over nine years. Judge Stephens said, in announcing the resignation, that Mr. Corbin made the decision because he was just working too many jobs, that there was too much work for the treasurer, and called him, "Our very capable treasurer." Flanking Mr. Corbin, above, are Adair County Jailer Joey White, left, and Sheriff Harrison Moss, right. Mr. Corbin is employed full time at the Russell County Hospital in Russell Springs, KY. In his time, he's seen the job's responsibilities grow from being mostly about sign checks, to one needing full time attention. That is coming with the employment, last night, of Linda Quinn, who was hired on a pay rate of $16.50 per hour for the first six months, to go to $17/per hour thereafter, on a motion by Magistrate Daryl Flatt (District 2), with a second by Billy Dean Coffey (5), approved by a unanimous vote. CJE Mike Stephens clarified how a treasurer is named, explaining that the treasurer's post is a decision for the full court. He said that the county judge executive has the sole responsibility for appointing the Finance Officer, currently Gale Cowan, but the treasurer's post is determined by the court. The vote for Linda Quinn was 8-0, with Judge Stephens joining in the unanimous decision. - EW

Adair County Sixth District Magistrate Greg Caldwell had some time for politicking before Fiscal Court went into regular monthly session last night, Tue 10 May 2016, and absolutely no doubt on where he stands in the race for U.S. Representative in the 1st Congressional District of Kentucky. He's holding a Comer campaign card. At right is James Comer, Tompkinsville, KY, campaigned all day in Adair County, attended Adair County Fiscal Court, and received a ringing endorsement from Adair County Judge Executive Michael L. Stephens. - EW

Charlie Crawhorn, Adair County Solid Waste Coordinator gave us a brief aside final report on the three-day Free Tire Disposal which ended Saturday, May 7, 2016. In all, 18 semi truck loads were carried away, he said, totalling around 34,000 tires. He didn't know if that were a record, but he said that he understood that 3 years ago, the total was around 21,000 tires. The event wass sponsored by Adair County Judge Executive Michael Lee Stephens, the Adair Fiscal Court, and the Kentucky Division of Waste Management. The court approved hiring David Smith to work as a part-time driver in Recycling, at a rate of $8.75 per hour. Crawhorn said that with that hiring, he is still in need of one more part-time employee to be fully staffed. - EW
