'Fighter' is back, up and about, after injury

2016-06-03 - Coburg, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It looks as though Charles Shirley is wearing a elbow length oven mitt ready to be a cook or baker, but, in fact, it's a colorful forearm splint. "You know I'm a boxer," he said, "and in my last bout I led too hard with my left, and hit 'em so bad I broke my arm. But you should have seen him after that punch." Norman Janes of Ebenezer Road in Taylor County would vouch that he also heard it, too. Of course there's another story, but the fun one, told in Charles' own unique style of humor, is the more entertaining one. If you see him, no need to sympathize with him, he's healing fast and will be as dangerous as ever before you know it. - EW

All but 1 of the 13 exchange students, above, who spent the last two semesters in Columbia, KY have returned home to pursue their studies in Japan, South Korea and Irleand. Ami Kumazawa, front row to the left, has extended her stay in America until September to gain additional experience. She will be doing her Internship at the "Wizard of Math" a US and Japan Exchange in San Diego where she will be helping to familiarize students with soroban (abacus) concepts and techniques, leading to the skill of mental calculation by developing the right-side brain ("image brain"), and make children no longer "allergic" to math. At home in Japan, she carried the title of "Japanese national abacus champion in mental calculation" five times (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2010), and the second prize in the other years 2001 to 2013.
