Scenic Adair Co., KY: The KY 76 Roadside Swamp

2016-09-04 - KY 76/Elkhorn Road, near Spout Springs, KY - Photo by Robert Ellis (c).
Here's a picture of the swamp along the highway on 76 between Pellyton and Knifley. When I was a boy this was a field and I remember hunters deer hunting in it when it was just a field. - Robert Ellis

Bicycle Launch Ramp into a world of uncertain safety

2016-09-04 - Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Tom Waggener used the ramp at our house to begin a bike ride in Columbia. We worry every time he's on the road on a bike, especially since tragic events which have occurred in Adair County last year, and, frankly, we wonder if there has been enough done to make sure Share the Road biking is safe since those incidents. Biking is a healthy, colorful sport and activity, and has a significant impact on the Adair County economy. Now, with Lindsey Wilson College in session, and campus safety a huge issue across the land, it's important to remember their presence on the roadways of Adair County. Tom returned after an hour, and reported no scary incidents. And then we only had to worry about his safe return to Teresa and Tillie, along KY 55, KY 555, KY 44, and KY 53, to Shelbyville, KY. He made that safe passage, too. - Ed Waggener

2016-09-04 - Columbia City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Generations of Columbians have only known one person, Donnie Rowe, as the face of the Columbia Street Department. He's been with the department now for 27 years. He could retire, he says, but has no intention to do so as long he can be of service to the community.

Inspiring ancient oak tree at fairgrounds

2016-09-04 - Old Adair County Fairground, 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Looking up into this huge oak tree, there's a vague memory of it's role in the great baseball games played here, when it was the home field for the semi-pro Garlin & Gradyville clubs - maybe others. The question comes to mind about whether the High School teams used the field or not for their games - I think ACHS did. The question is: Wasn't it automatically a home run when the ball was batted into the trees in the Grove? Today, every building, every venue gets a name, first for an individual, and then, when it can be commercialized, naming rights are sold to corporations. If this field were commemorated thusly, who would it be called. Cy Barger Field would come to mind. Or it might be named for Berley Young, Hubert Edwards, or Stanley Downey, or even E.A. Diddle. Just a thought, looking toward the heavens through that tree. - EW

Arnold Patterson gives pronunciation lesson for Revisit Knifley

2016-09-04 - Pattersons Bait & Grocery, 5855 Elkhorn Road, Knifley, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Arnold Patterson, the founder, proprietor emeritus, and entertainer & lecturer-in-chief at Patterson's Bait & Grocery pointed to the word "Knifley" and noted that over and over again, jobbers and distributors will take an order over the phone and confirm details and, most of the time, when they get to the town name, they say, "Knife-ly." It is of course, "Niffly" but how you prounounce it doesn't rattle Knifleyans. They just want everyone to come to the 2016 Revisit Knifley celebration, which gets underway Friday, September 9, 2016 and then explodes with events on the big day, September 10, 2016. Things have been extraordinarily busy in Knifley this Labor Day Weekend, but it's nothing to the thousands who are expected this coming week.

Learning about new foods (and crafts) at Square Meals Cafe

2016-09-04 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Vicky Pike.
Jordan and Andy enjoying lunch at the Square Meals Cafe. They are regulars along with their mother Robin Pike says the children enjoy coming to the cafe for the food as well as the crafts . They've only missed twice since the program started. Square Meals Cafe teaches kis to eat healthy - if they clean their plate, they get a healthy dessert. The Cafe encourages kids to try new veggies so they know what they taste like. It's a great idea for getting them to try new foods. - Vicky Pike
