Heralding fall color: Sumac on Grady Loop, Columbia, KY
2016-09-08 - Grady Loop, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c). Sumac drupes are bright red now. From the Sumac entry in Wikipedia the species would seem to have more value than just standing around being pretty. That article suggests various spice, tea, and even medicinal uses for Sumac - but there are some varieties which are toxic in part. Sumac expert Billy Joe Fudge also touts the plant for its landscape qualities. See Trees of KY: Sumac is beautiful edge tree, and even gives a primer on telling the difference between Staghorn Sumac, above, and its droopy drupe cousin, Winged Sumac. See Trees of Kentucky: Staghorn sumac pods stand erect. And in another photo, Staghorn Sumac: Brilliant Red now give a hint of what's coming late October-Early November in local forests, fencerows, and in the delightfully freshly conquered, but charming fields of sumac.
