Dr. Gerald Chafin, Associate Professor of Music and Conductor of the Lindsey Wilson Singers, received a proclamation from Kentucky Governor Matthew Bevin stating that the Lindsey Wilson Singers will be the official Kentucky Delegates at the 2016 National Festival of the States in Oahu, Hawaii commemorating the attack on Pearl Harbor. The festival will take place next month. This delightful little flower - if our ID is correct - is pretty and useful, at least according to wikipedia.org/wiki/Impatiens_capensis. The article says it the plants leaves and stems render an ointment useful in treating poison ivy rashes. It lists other names: Impatiens, and touch-me-nots. According to the article, the orange jewelweed is common. Soybeans - beyond edamame, nighing feed & steering wheels 2016-09-26 - Egypt, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c). Linda spotted these maturing soybeans near Plum Point Baptist Church and wondered if they could be eaten as edamame. Of course, enlightenment is needed, if anyone in Adair County has experience eating locally grown soybeans as a vegetable. These appear to be beyond the edamame stage. Seeing the crop, oldsters may remember when the crop was rarely, if ever seen in Adair County. They will remember it from trips to exotic places like Jefferson County, KY and Henderson or Daviess County. In the summer time, entering Jefferson County via Dixie Highway, past Benny's First & Last Stop, through Kosmosdale and on into Shively, their were vast truck farms as well as fields of soybeans. The eldest made it a teaching moment to let other passengers know about soybeans. Back home in Adair County, perhaps the earliest memories, too, might have been of the expert in all things automotive 10 year old peer, who would put their hands on the steering wheel, and ask another if they knew what the steering wheel was made of, and quickly, before the other could answer, say "Soybeans." Indeed some early steering wheels were made from soybean derivatives. Thoroughbred Stallion - Every motorcycle in the 10th Annual Steel Horse Stampede in Burkesville stood out, because of its color, it's rider, or it's difference. This one was the most unusual. It's lines appear a little Chevy-ish, in reverse (turns out) With the Stampede galloping on, there was no opportunity to get he details. Enlightenment: The "motorcycle" is a Thoroughbred Stallion, vehicle which has a Ford Ranger engine, a steering wheel (motorcycle purists insist that makes it not a motorcycle), air conditioning ducts, and automobile type controls. These plants were standing like sentries along the byway in Cumberland County. They remind of cattails, but may not be kin. The spikes aren't as corn-doggish as cattails.
