Joe Hare: Where Mr. Crump viewed the lights of Columbia

An unforgettable photo to go with an unforgettable story, posted on CM in 2007, with the following caption: After reading Gordon Crump's story, "How I discovered Columbia . . . when Columbus didn't," photographer Joe Hare tried to find the spot where Mr. Crump stood to view the lights of Columbia when he was a student there in 1947. Joe Hare thinks the exact view may not exist now, due to new buildings, power poles, and larger tree. But he's taken a photo which most will agree is a masterpiece to go with Mr. Crump's masterpiece. The emotions one might imagine a post-WWII freshman might experience, seeing a view similar to, if not exactly like, this one, listening to Now the day is over on the Columbia Baptist Church Chimes.

Remembering Gordon Crump in 2006: The Hermit of Clay Ridge

The photo of Gordon Crump was taken in 2006 and posted on his 80th birthday, October 17, 2006. The caption read, "Happy 80th birthday to Gordon Crump former editor of the Columbia, KY, DAILY STATESMAN and now the celebrated Hermit of Two Springs Road, Clay Ridge, KY. This photo was taken back in the summer. Mr. Crump is leading the life he wants, raising Netherlands dwarf goats, talking with friends at the store, and communicating with family and friends all over the world on he internet. He's pictured above with his favorite Netherlands dwarf milk goat, Baby Doll. No pet in Adair County leads a better life. The story accompanied the story, At 80, Gordon Crump proves you can live the life you want / "Hermit of Clay Ridge" bought 13-acre farm sight-unseen 10 years ago.." Mr. Crump passed away Sunday, September 25, 2016. A memorial service is today at 10amCT, at Horse Cave United Methodist Church, 207 College St, Horse Cave, KY. His burial will follow at Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery on Main Street in Horse Cave, Kentucky. Obituary Mr. Gordon Crump, 88, Adair Co., KY (d. 25 Sep 2016)
