Fall color was already showing nicely down by The Slew - the slowly moving waters along KY 80 East of Edmonton, near Red Lick in Metcalfe County, KY. The stretch of highway is one of the most beautiful in Kentucky, in any season, and one not so heavily traveled as it was in the days before the Louie B Nunn/Cumberland Parkway. - EW.

There are fewer and fewer "iron bridges" today. This one, in Eastern Metcalfe County, on part of the land ceded from Adair County in 1860 to form the Free State of Metcalfe. It was a misguided effort to reduce the number of Democrats in Adair County. One could wonder if Adair County might not have had more than one enlightened voter for Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 election if this section had not been given away. (See: A profile in courage: The single Adair Countian who voted for Lincoln in 1860 by JIM). Anyway, this bridge is a favorite, year round, for artists, poets,and photographers. There was just a hint of fall color when this photo was taken on Saturday, October 15, 2016. - EW.
