The largest of the courthouse trees, the maple facing Jamestown Street, was removed Thursday evening, November 17, 2016 by Mike and brother Chris Wall of Barns & More (the "More" is tree work, which is very busy this time of the year), and his uncle Gary Melson, who is in the bucket. On the ground is Chris' and Mike's father, Donnie Wall. The tree was completely removed Thursday night and the limbs were hauled away. The tree on the Greensburg Street side of the courthouse will be removed one day next week, Mike Wall said. - EW. Paired Photo. David Jones, Adair County School District, featured an in-house, student/teacher, Ag & Welding department fabrication collaboration which resulted in all shiny new dumpsters for the Adair County School District campus. The District supplied the materials, which were fabricated by Barney Taylor's Welding classes, and were then painted by the Adair County High School Agriculture Students. When the new dumpsters are put in place around the campus, they will not only be more attractive, but are projected by Mr. Jones to save the district a net of some $20,000 over the expected lifetime of the containers. - EW. The Community got the stunning news Thursday evening here, about an hour after this photo was taken, that Supt. Alan Reed would retire December 31, 2016. In his brief tenure as Superintendent, he did as much as any other Adair Countian ever, to advance the educational and maybe more importantly, the economic position of all facets of the local economy - education, itself, manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, health and other facets - of the county, and it was all done in the face of shrinking financial support for public schools in Adair County and across the state. Now there is an uncertainty about the future of those Adair County School District gains, and with it, an uncertainty about the very future of Adair County. Local leaders are hoping for the best. According to information learned at the Tues 15 Nov 2016 meeting of the Columbia Adair County Economic Development Authority, the Sleep Inn will open around December 1, 2016, and according to reports at the meeting, the enterprise will add another 25-30 jobs to the local economy. - EW.
