I was taking some photos a couple of weeks ago of some hummingbirds and got more then I expected. And so did the humming bird. Just when I took the photo a hornet decided to show up and say hi. In the photo it looks like the hummingbird is ready to defend his feeder to the death but as soon as he realized it was a hornet, he did the same thing I did. Updated June 10, 2017: Up close and personal, the big bird turned out to be one of the usual suspects, a black turkey vulture, entertaining in its horaltic pose. Billy Joe Fudge and James Bost prompted more thorough research, and I agree with them now. It's a friendly, we-need-more-of-them turkey vulture. Black vultures appear totally black from a distance, but up close there is a bit of a red ring. Look close, too, at them beady eyes.. Black vultures are wreaking havoc with livestock, and are, birds of prey as well as scavengers. The huge, wild turkey size bird was compelling sight in the rain, seen from the road, even though the mission was to find a favorite structure, a "blooming barn." The credentials of the rooftop ruler could not be easily vetted from the roadway. Still the creature if itself were not worthy of some digital film, the promise of the vines was worth the time for documentation. - EW. Traffic Light diagram at FM2/City Hall/GMFH/Judicial Center 2017-06-09 - Campbellsville Street at N Reed/Merchant Street, Columbia, KY . The diagram above is an engineer's drawing of the Traffic Signal Rebuild in Columbia, KY, now underway. As a reference, the large circle in the upper right represents the famed sculpture "Scales of Justice" and fountain at the Adair Judicial Center. Counter clockwise, the corners are FM2, City Hall, and Grissom-Martin Funeral Home. The design will serve a very desirable function of keeping huge trucks with alternate routes out of downtown, Mayor Curtis Hardwick is concerned with the designs effect on the Columbia/Adair County Fire Department's use of the intersection as designed. "Some of the truck's are 54 feet long," he said, "And I don't see how they can make the turn." He said that he see's no alternate route for the firefighters to use which would not mean long response times. Mayor Hardwick is appealing the design. And, at this point, hopes to get it changed. With two of the last major traffic changes in Columbia being so hugely successful, the left-on-yellow signal change at Russell Road on Jamestown Street, and the pure genius construction of the Town Creek Diversion and traffic changes at Campbellsville Street and Fairground Street executed by the Somerset District Office, one would hope that the design above might be in the same category. Two elements which might make the turns possible are the placement of the "Stop Bars" on northbound traffic south of the intersection, and on southbound traffic north of the intersection. Both will be more distant from the traffic lights, which will give more room for turns. Columbia Mayor Curtis Hardwick is concerned about the encroachment of curbs into the intersection of Campbellsville Street with the Kentucky Highway Department's now-in-progress traffic signal rebuild. Above, he's illustrating how far from the present curb the new one will be. His major concern is whether or not Columbia Fire Department units can negotiate the turns from Merchant Street onto Campbellsville Streets in an emergency.
