Heavy rains have given us many gifts this season, like this lakeside art at Pleasant Hill dock in Russell County recently. Composing the photo, I was reminded of my lovely mother-in-law, Audrey Chelf Waggener, who asked me once if anything had ever scared me so badly I couldn't stand to talk about it for weeks? What had scared her like that? She had attended a family event at the lake and when she stepped up to get on the houseboat, her foot slipped and she headed down toward the dark water. Larry Smith, FM 99.9 The Big Dawg general manager & South Central Kentucky historian and archivist, found this poster from the 1972 Adair County Fair, a reminder, especially this year, of the major role the fair has played in our lives, which, thanks to the dedication of a dedicated group of Columbia/Adair County Jaycees, iives on this year, even without a traditional fairgrounds. Epicurean Kentuckian: Spicier slaw 2017-06-24 - South Central Kentucky - Photo Epicurean Kentuckian. Great slaws are signature dishes in many South Central Kentucky restaurants, straight from the kitchen. Tasty, but sometimes there is a craving for spicier elements. Polite doctoring is required etiquette, for those who want to fix 'at up. Pulling a tiny bottle of Tabasco sauce from a suit vest pocket, a la Dan Rather, is much too show folksy, but discreet doctoring can be pulled off without disapproving curiosity of the wait staff. Maybe you have your own style. My preference for most Miller Beer-of-slaws one size fits 80% of the world slaws is to usually add a bit of vinegar, often tableside, a bit of mustard - if I have a jaws of life or Swiss Army Knife scissors to open the packets of mustard handed out on request, and maybe a bit more pepper, dosed with a hidden, carry in sprinkler of turmeric. - EW Comments? | Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo.
