The only thing to add beauty to the already extraordinary hills and valleys of south central Kentucky is a surprising colorful blossom to make us take a second look. These fiery orange Gladioli, sometimes called a sword lily, were simply "Glads" when I was growing up. And they were pink and they were "Isabelle's Glads," so named by my Grandma Leftwich who called them that because her daughter Caroline Isabelle Sandidge, the teacher, made a fine small garden easily seen from the kitchen table. Isabelle was one of Grandma's nine children who followed her older sister to California, married her sweetheart Welby, a construction worker with a job there. They had two sweet sons, Donald and Welby Jan, but then, tragically, Welby passed away and she came back to live and raise their sons at home in Edmonton. When veterans and fellow bikers saw this small plaque on the back of Bill Demrow's Motorcycle Hearse, they told the owner, "You knew Joe Gadberry, didn't you." But Demrow told them the truth, he didn't. The Board of Directors of the Bank of Columbia has appointed Mark A. Dykes as the 17th President of the financial institution. The new president is a native of Adair County and now resides at Gradyville, KY. He brings 27 years of banking experience to his new position. The new President is a 1986 graduate of Adair County High School. He attended Lindsey Wilson College and obtained a Bachelor of Science majoring Agricultural Economics in 1990 from the University of Kentucky.
