Chris Mullins, Chris Lagermann, and Carol Mullins display the new plastic boxes that Red Lick United Methodist Church will pack with gifts for Samaritan's Purse's Operation Christmas Child in November. The 120 boxes were paid for through a "Live Generously Action Team" program through Thrivent Financial. They also show six boxes containing 24 new chairs that were purchased through the Thrivent Financial Direct Choice program. A towering figure at Lindsey Wilson College, Garry Coomer, watched the removal work on the VFW War Memorial monument Thursday, August 3, 2017. In November of 2017, Mr. Coomer will have been at Lindsey Wilson College for 47 years. No one else is close to his length of service in the history of the school. Few people in Columbia have had so many honors: A Campus Street is named for him. His name is on plaques across the campus, including one in the new VFW Hall. In all likelihood, he'll be around for his half-century mark at the school, where he is a very popular man on campus. He works in one of Columbia's biggest employers, Plant Operations at Lindsey Wilson College, where some 80 individuals work. The provenance: My sister Jean, whose garden is in Indianapolis, gave some seed for one of these "Goat's Bag Tomatoes" to my sister Fay McKinney and gardeners Mitzi and Ricky Bault. The name derives from the shape of the tomato, likened to a goat's udder. The seed, planted in the perfect tomato growing soil on McKinley Lane. I took this picture of this tree back late winter and this past weekend while I was in that area I meant to locate this tree to take a picture of it while bearing its fruit . . . but got distracted with other photography in other places. I would add that some folks in that area are quite aware of the "healing" properties of the lowly apple.
