According to Mitzi Bault, this tomato is the best tasting one - before it was cut it showed a split across the top, usually smooth side. She was right. The thick slice was perfect, if unfair addition to a the breakfast ribeye Waye Armitage grilled for take out at the the Farmers Market on the Square. Perhaps, photographically, the picture is unfair to the delicacy, served atop grilled peppers & onions on a big hoagie bun. For $6, still one of the great bargains anywhere. Farmers Market on the Square was held on one of the most pleasant days of the year, with plenty of produce. Tim Blackaby is here today, but at 7:36 this morning, it appeared he had already sold out of chicken feet. That was not the case, he said. The sign was left over from the week before. And was quickly reversed. There were plenty of apples from Scott's Highland Orchards. Wayne Armitage had breakfasts and lunches of ribeye sandwiches, great ones. Kellis Booth's popular pastries booth was set up. David Herbst said that his peach season - his most successful yet - was sold out two weeks earlier than last year. But customers were buying apples by the half peck, and he had sweet, seedless, watermelons at the best prices seen this year. It was the first day of the market without a Square Meals Cafe, badly missed. And the crowd was down, but vendors said buying was good. Thanks to those master tomato growers, Ricky & Mitzi Bault, and Basil supplier Darrell Bunnell, Green Pepper purveyor Margie Rooks, and onion supplier in this case Walmart, and some of Mr. Tyson's chicken, this supper of Skillet BBQ Chicken with a salad was put together in no time. Accompanied by some white wine from Carmel, it did very well. The tomatoes cut in half and sprinkled with a bit of salt and drizzled with Bragg vinegar, was downright pretty good, too. Clean up was simple, too, since Cast Iron Skillet Chef Robert Flowers told how easy it is using only salt. Spills at home are easy too, so long as one remembers the advice of the late Master Chef Donald Pedigo who gave us the always-cook-in-your-socks advice. Just wipe the spill up with your socks. It's the handiest way.
