The Breeding High School Building has prevailed for 63 years as its own monument since the last classes attended in 1953-1954, when Breeding, Columbia, and Knifley High Schools were consolidated to create Adair County High School in Columbia, KY.

Will White, left, handled the setup and helped take photographs for ColumbiaMagazine.com at the 2017 Adair County Wares Fair at Lindsey Wilson College Thursday evening. It was the Chamber of Commerce's 11th Wares Fair, attended by 350 students with 40 local businesses, churches and organizations, showing the students what is offered locally, and welcoming them here. Students were from from around the world with the Chamber's grand prize being won by a young man from Kenya, Africa. Will is pictured holding an informational flyer with Linda Waggener.

Liam McGough, a member of the ACHS STEM Club, hands a pair of Solar Eclipse Glasses to Chairperson of the Board Lisa Burton (Div 3), as Dr. Pam Stephens, Superintendent, left, looks on. Second from right is Coleman Hurt, Attorney, and School Board Member Jonathan Gaskins (4). Superintendent Stephens said that students whose parents request they stay home will be allowed to do so without penalty, but viewers will not be provided to them. Students who wish to participate in outdoor activities will be allowed to do so, with permission slips signed by their parents. Students in the lower grades, with permission slips, will be able to take part in Eclipse Activities, but will be on sides away from the sun. They will experience the two minutes of darkness, but without the risk of damage to their eyes. - EW

Arabella Caldwell and Benjamin Hancock, above, members of the Adair County High School STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) Club, described the Solar Eclipse which, they reported will have 98.473% darkness here in Columbia, KY, on Monday, starting at 1:29pmCT and lasting until 1:31pmCT. Also taking part in the presentation was Liam McGough, not in photo. Hancock compared the solar eclipse to the Kentucky Derby: "The Derby is the fastest two minutes in sports. The Total Eclipse of the sun will be the fastest two minutes in science." He said that Western Kentucky University has provided eclipse viewing glasses for every student in the school system, and that a busload of students from ACHS are going to Elkton, Todd County, KY, to experience the Eclipse within the path of Totality.

The Bird Man (Turtle Man?) like phantom was mirrored in the chrome housing on Ivan Greer's 1933 Chevrolet Touring car. How it happened is anybody's guess. It does not look like anyone we know. - EW

Scenic Adair County, KY - Field of Golden Leaf, at harvest time

Historic New Concord Church, at the intersection of New Concord Road and Cecil Blair Road, is beautiful through the seasons, and was especially so on Saturday, August 19, 2017, with the field of perfect uniform golden leaf burley tobacco, ready for harvest. Time was, as few decades ago, when huge acreage of this extent was seen only in the Bluegrass, but now, where tobacco is grown in Adair County, it is on an industrial scale, and fields such as this one are the rule, rather than the exception. - EW
