Fall brings incredible colors of leaves and continuing blooming weeds like the Queen Anne's Lace -- only "Don't call them weeds. Call them plants," in the words of flower girl Joyce Coomer. She and I agree that every plant has a reason, like them or not. Alicia Bosela says that before you mow or weed whack, remember, every plant is a food source with some purpose in the life cycle of this planet. 2017 Square Crows without portfolios: DeLaval/Columbia 'entry' 2017-10-03 - Fountain Plaza, in front of 130 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Bradford Bailey, left, and Phillip Akin were representing DeLaval's founding as living Square Crows this morning, Tuesday, October 3, 2017, while, they claimed, "waiting for the bus." Between them, they have almost 80 years experience at the DeLaval, later IMO Pump, plant in Columbia. Phillip Akin was in the first class, held at the old Curry Flooring Building, for workers at the plant when it first opened. Bradford Bailey was in the second class. Both were in the original 45 workers hired at the plant which has meant so much to the economy of Adair County. Both are now retired. Didn't find out which "bus" they were waiting for; it's been a long time since Hack Rowe close the Greyhound office here, and even longer since the Fuqua lines bus from Somerset to Hopkinsville, KY, ran the airport limousine Chevrolet along KY 80. Mary Ann Loy, asking that some step be taken to implement the now funded sidewalk line item budget, asked again, and got assent, for starting the Greensburg Street Sidewalk from the Joe Flowers corner at Greensburg and Dillon Street. Listening hard from the Council are Mayor Curtis Hardwick, City Attorney Marshall Loy, and Council Member Craig Lasley as well as, not visible in photo, Council Members Linda Waggener, Pam Hoots, and Mark Harris and City Clerk Rhonda Loy and in foreground, City Police Chief Jason Cross. Council Member Pam Hoots and other council members agreed that project is priority number one, and said that the City's formally appointed Sidewalk Committee would meet Tue 3 Oct 2017, to decide on a formal request for the council to approve in a subsequent, possibly called meeting. Mary Ann Loy asked that a near no cost baby step - but an important one, be implemented, with the city providing flags for motorized scooters which would make them more visible to drivers of vans, trucks and especially semis. The flags cost no more than $6 in bike shops, she said, and Barry Loy, her husband, suggested they could be purchased from Walmart online, for as little as half that (Corrected, Walmart Price wasn't mention, just that they are available at Walmart online. The council took no action on the modest proposal, but Council Member Mark Harris, at the end of the meeting, asked that the program be undertaken, even if Council Members themselves provided the money for the purchase of the flags. Photo 02 Oct 2017. - EW "Minnie Lewis Triplett was born December 5th 1865 to Lewis and Frances Murrell Triplett. Miss Minnie is considered to be the mother of the modern day library in Adair County. She occupied an office space in the courthouse and checked in and out books every Saturday for twenty years. Miss Minnie obtained her passport in 1917 and traveled to Panama. In 1939 she made her home in Panama for twelve years.
