Catching the fire escape on the Lindsey Wilson/Jeffries Building Friday morning, I wondered where the device fits in history, and how it came to be in the first place, and whether it is unique. It is fascinating to study how it works, and wonder whether it did, in fact, ever save a life. One wonders whether real estate folks call this a three story building with a basement or a four story building, since the beautifully arched door lower left is ground level, and was placed there, at street level, for the possibility of retail entrance to a shop in a future repurposing.
