Kentucky Color - Pine Straw Mulch

2017-11-30 - Green Hills neighborhood, Columbia, KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
How could I have missed it? For years since moving to Green Hills I’ve spent hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for all kinds of mulch. At the same time I was raking and burning pine needles from my Loblolly Pines in the back yard. Then it came to me, Pine Barrens! Pine Barrens are an ecosystem created beneath monoculture Pine Forests. They are called "Barrens" because the forest floor is barren of any understory growth. So, hmmm, hmmm, could it be that Pine needles are nature’s perfect landscaping mulch? Well, as they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words." - BILLY JOE FUDGE

Sunset: Dunnville Road toward Eunice, Adair County, KY

2017-11-30 - Dunnville Road, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Driving along South Central Kentucky Roads, one almost questions the designation "Scenic Highway," for some and not others - though no road in America could deserve the label more than KY 704 - there's scarcely a byway anywhere in this region which is not scenic. Dunnville Road Adair County/River Road Casey County, is a standout - a soul strengthening remedy for the trials and tribulations of any day, as it was yesterday evening, coming through a stretch of woodland, driving toward the waning light, coming home to Columbia. - EW/LW
