His message was on there being light at the end of the tunnel and he emphasized there are people in the world who truly care. Birds of Kentucky: Sandhill Cranes in Barren Co., KY 2017-11-30 - Barren County, KY, - Photo from Gil Lawson, Kentucky State Parks. Barren River Lake State Resort Park will host its Sandhill Crane tours on two weekends in late January, 2018. Thousands of Sandhill Cranes make Barren River Lake a winter stop as they congregate in huge numbers to migrate. Barren River offers van tours for guests to learn more about these intriguing birds with a unique sound. The tours will be Jan. 20-21 and Jan. 27, 2018. Registration is required due to limited seating. Each weekend also includes an educational session conducted by a wildlife biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources on Friday evening at 7pmCT. Registration is $45 per adult and $30 per child 8-12 years old (must be at least 8 years old to go on van tours). The fee includes all educational sessions, a box lunch, and a T-shirt. Free guided nature hikes are also available at 9amCT and 2 pmCT on January 20 and 27, 2018. Discounted senior tours for guests ages 55 and older will be on Wednesdays, Jan. 17 and Jan. 24, at $40 per person. The lake’s exposed mud flats in winter provide the birds with a perfect spot to rest and socialize as they settle in for the night. Area farmlands and wet meadows offer plenty of food. The park is located at 1149 State Park Road, Lucas, KY. From the Louis B. Tillie was busy making a sign for a private gathering in a meeting room at Sixth & Main Coffee Shop recently. It would read, "Only for the Waggener Girls," and was posted on the meeting room door. When Mema Linda attempted to enter, Tillie's younger cousin, Hailey halted her. "This is for Waggener girls only," she announced, then looked up at her Mema and asked her, "Are you a Waggener"? And only after fully explaining her full transition from a young girl from the tiny town of Sulphur Well finding happiness in urban Columbia, KY as the wife of a hopeful young newspaper man - last name Waggener - did Hailey acquiesce and grant entry. It was a fine moment for an early genealogy lesson, which, by the way, immortals under the age 25 rarely appreciate; but be sure, if you live long enough, you'll realize they remember forever. - EW.
