All available parking space at the Judicial Center, in the FM2 Municipal Parking Lot, and on Campbellsville Street, was nearly packed as the time the Pension Town Forum was to begin tonight. At this lull in the waves attending, one of the guests of honor, Senator Max Wise, was entering the building. Senator Wise and Rep. Bam Carney are discussing changes which are now being made in Frankfort. The forum is hosted by the local KEA, and was open to any person affected by the state retirement system. The word after the meeting was positive. People felt they'd been heard and that their questions would be represented in the days ahead. In early December 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt was the Presidential nominee, having crushed incumbent Herbert Hoover a month earlier. The Great Depression was in its fourth year and showed no signs of letting up; in fact, it worsened almost daily with banks closing, industrial production sharply declining, and unemployment soaring, and as Christmas approached, there was little cause for good cheer for most Americans. Still, a number of Columbia merchants ran gift idea ads in hopes of attracting the few discretionary dimes and dollars. The new cleaner, less intrusive traffic lights are in place at one of Columbia's busiest intersections. The jury is still out - maybe it permanently hung - on the benefits.
