The squirrel was taking fast lane electrical wires over East Fortune Street across to a handy Magnolia tree which provides cover and a path up to the third floor in a huge divining (I'm from the oilfields of Metcalfe: Metcalfe Countians know their dowsing!) Elm from whence one can launch in several directions covering a broad area between Guardian, Burkesville and Jamestown Streets. Never see one without remembering first grandson Graham as a tiny boy watching out his window, spotting a squirrel and declaring, "CURL! As photo, taken this morning, shows, hemlock is in its early growth stage along the banks of Cool Springs Creek, still clinging low to the ground with brand new leaves. These poison plants will grow very rapidly to heights of over six feet and reproduce. Lauren Cassidy McQuaide, second from left, the first student from Adair County High School ever to earn the Cherry Presidential Scholarship at WKU, thanks the many who have helped her along her journey. She says it started with family and childhood play mixed with learning. Pictured from left are her big sister/best friend Sarah Ann McQuaide, Laura, and their parents Mary Ann and Dr. Glen McQuaide. Both parents have careers in education. Her father is professor of biology at Campbellsville University. Her mother is the school psychologist in the Adair public schools system. Sarah is now a University of Louisville student well on her way to a medical career. They're one of the most hearty, tasty saltine crackers/galletas saladas on the market, found occasionally at Sav-A-Lot, Columbia's only downtown grocery.
