Should Standpipes be preserved?
2018-03-28 - KY 55 South Road, Greater Glens Fork/Crocus/Graball/Montpelier, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. This standpipe has long been a travel marking place for motorists along Hwy 55 South Road. They are bing phased out now. But should some of them be preserved? One day, in all likelihood, they will have the same pleasant nostalgic interest as cisterns, hand pumps, and sand buckets. Many already find this one to have that reassuring quality. It's still emblazoned with Adair County Water District, even though it is now owned by Columbia/Adair Utilities District. - EW

Daffodil Watch 2018 - Undaunted in Russell Co., KY 27 Mar 2018
2018-03-28 - U.S. 127, north of Sewellton, Russell County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Russell County, KY, abounds with random right-of-way patches of daffodils. There's a north facing hillside just north of the Sewellton, KY, at the southern terminus of KY 55, that we try to see at it's peak, but it appeared that the peak had passed this year on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. (Or will warmer weather bring a spring revival by Easter Sunday???). But the trip was well worth it, seeing these beauties and other similar ones all along the roadsides, wondering if the right-of-way flowers happen by benign neglect, or if some secret sharer protects and propogates them. - EW
