African American History Month proclaimed in City of Columbia 2019-02-26 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Wes Feese, editor, Adair Progress. Felicia Lasley, left, joined with Mayor Pam Hoots at City Hall proclaiming February as African American History Month in Columbia. This month, honoring African American History month, Columbia Magazine has featured students and fellow educators in the photo collections of Mrs. Evelyn Hughes who taught at Knifley, Flatwoods Rosenwald School and John Adair. She was the youngest of seven children born to Samuel Zack Hughes and Effie Staton Hughes of the Rockhouse Bottom/Crocus areas of Russell and Adair Counties, according to her nephew, educator Sammy Hughes, who shared the keepsake pictures. He said there was also a lot of Native American heritage in her Staton family roots and Evelyn's grandmother spoke Cherokee. He described both families, the Statons and the Hugheses, as hard working, church oriented conservative Baptists.
