Located in Jamestown, it's close enough to make an enjoyable day trip of free hands on learning. The parking lot is typically full of Kentucky license plates from all counties and out-of-state plates from all across the U.S. Common Snapping Turtle with a mean mug. Though never having experienced it myself, I have heard the old tale that if he clamps his jaws onto you he won't let go until it thunders. Those interested in the hatchery can see several concrete pools of minnows, trout too small to enter into the outdoor facility. Birds of Kentucky: Great Blue Heron 2019-07-14 - Shelby Co., KY - Photo by Pen. According to All About Birds, "Great Blue Herons have specialized feathers on their chest that continually grow and fray. The herons comb this 'powder down' with a fringed claw on their middle toes, using the down like a washcloth to remove fish slime and other oils from their feathers as they preen.
