A juvenile red-shouldered hawk, perched atop a small tree in Beckley Creek Park in eastern Jefferson County. Now that most of the trees are bare, it's much easier to spot all the hawks in the area.

A question: I wonder how birds decide who attends the evening gathering as the sun sets? Just family members? Are they all the same kind/race of birds? Is it decided by where they are from - a whole community - maybe only the birds from Sulphur Well in one group? Or is it random - simply whoever can fit? Just wondering. - LW
