Deer family alert to passing sounds

This family of deer thought about crossing the Holmes Bend road in the warm sunshine, then thought again when they heard a bark from inside the car. They turned away, listened again, and at the sounds of a few more commanding barks, took off into the woods. Lucy 3, deer 0.

Mama Cat hiding in The Giving Tree

2020-02-16 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.

The Giving Tree on Fortune Street in Columbia has been important to many generations as a climbing place, a bridge over Town Creek and an aid in fire building with its dropped limbs after high winds. The ancient Catalpa also provides fishing worms for those who know it's there and come to pick off the huge yellow and black worms in spring. The tree has slowly leaned and leaned over the years until part of it had to be cut off and we feared it would die. It did not. Even with a huge part of its trunk open to animals like Mama Cat who finds safety and comfort in its tunnel, the tree still gives. I don't think anyone has read The Giving Tree to the cats - maybe I'll do that. - LW

Shirley Harris enjoyed birthday celebrations last week - she is pictured here with her son Mike when he took her out for lunch in New Columbia. Shirley said of her 84th birthday that it felt like 64, only her son Terry in New York said she couldn't claim that because that's his age.
