A pharmacist that's part of the solution

2020-03-19 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Easton Bryant, owner of North Century Pharmacy in Columbia, has a desire to be part of the solution getting people back to good health when they need help, and to stay healthy when they can. You've heard that the pharmacy is specializing in compounding but this allows non-healthcare folks to learn what that means - he has created, "mixed/compounded," hand sanitizer at a time when it is very hard to get in this coronavirus pandemic. And the reason this is featured free of charge in ColumbiaMagazine.com news is that he's giving it free of charge to people in need. Details and contact information are in the story linked to this photo.

School Board holds 'new style' meeting, 17 Mar 2020

2020-03-19 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
For a monthly Adair County School Board meeting, there are normally more vehicles outside and people in attendance. The March 2020 meeting Tuesday night was light of traffic because only ten people were allowed in the board room to comply with Gov. Beshear's calls to help curb the spread of COVID-19. The meeting was also shown live on YouTube under Adair County Schools. Academic Dean Phyllis Curry was granted authority by the board to enter into the NTI (Non-Traditional Instruction) program which allows school to remain in session under the new methods of communication without gathering in classrooms. Prior to the inception of NTI, Kentucky school districts lost many days of school due to bad weather. Adair County Public Schools are in session only online now through April 10, 2020. Instructional packets for school-at-home are being distributed today and tomorrow, Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2020.

Strange feeling with just a hand full of people out

2020-03-18 - New Columbia, KY - Photo by Victoria Pike of Miss Vicky\'s Pampered Angus Ranch.
Trucks were lined up in the parking lot at Walmart 9:30pm. I counted 5. Few shoppers still out. Most other businesses already closed and lights out. This is a strange feeling seeing just a hand full of people on the roads. Mostly trucks passing. Saw a Dollar General truck pass on the parkway.
We understand the third shift of Walmart is still working even though the store is closed to customers between 11pm and 6amCT. Restocking is being done as fast as possible.

Springtime view of Lindsey Wilson

2020-03-18 - Columbia, KY - Photo courtesy Lindsey Wilson College.
A quiet springtime view of the campus of Lindsey Wilson College. The lack of foot traffic may be standard for the rest of the spring semester. According to Lindsey Wilson College President William T. Luckey Jr., college officials made the unprecedented decision to take all classes online for the remainder of the semester on Wednesday in response to a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control to discourage gatherings of ten or more people.

Reminder: Storms are possible this evening

2020-03-18 - Columbia, KY - Photo courtesy Mike Keltner, Adair Co. Emergency Management.
The National Weather Service in Louisville reminds everyone that "A few strong thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon and early evening, mainly across south central Kentucky. The strongest storms will produce brief heavy rainfall and gusty or locally damaging winds. An isolated tornado also can't be ruled out with any stronger storm."
