Postcards from LWC: Fugate Family

2020-05-08 - Columbia, KY - Photo courtesy Lindsey Wilson College.
Dakota Smith writes, "Meet Andy, Casey, Jacob and Catelynn Fugate. They have been a host family for 4 years, and their favorite thing about it is the opportunity to expand their horizons by being exposed to different cultures, while cultivating lifelong memories and relationships with their host students. Their children are able to experience the world in an entirely unique way, and their entire family has been greatly enriched by this experience and are looking forward to hosting many more students in the years to come! A fun fact about them is that they are thrill seekers! From jumping out of airplanes, to paragliding over the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains, to hang gliding, hot air ballooning, zorbing, scuba diving and more, they are always seeking the next big thrill! Their children are adventurous souls as well; having participated in activities such as whitewater rafting, zip lining, Zorbing and deep sea fishing! "

Birds of Kentucky: Field Sparrow

2020-05-07 - Jefferson Co., KY - Photo by Pen.
According to the Wikipedia entry for Spizella pusilla, "The male sings from a higher perch, such as a shrub or fencepost, which indicates his ownership of the nesting territory. The song is a series of sad whistles ending in a trill, often compared to the accelerating sound of a bouncing ball."

Spring means bear awareness

2020-05-07 - Kentucky - Photo courtesy Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.
The arrival of spring means bear activity is on the rise in Kentucky. Young male bears instinctively disperse from their home areas and wander widely in the spring and summer. It is possible to see a roaming bear anywhere in the state. Resident bear range is as close as Russell County.

Postcards from LWC: Emilija Kusic

2020-05-07 - Columbia, KY - Photo courtesy Lindsey Wilson College.
Dakota Smith writes, "Meet Emilija Kusic. She is from a small town in Bosnia and Herzegovina named Trebinje. She will be studying Recreation, Tourism and Sport Management and will be on the track team. A fun fact about her is that she used to train in Track and Field, Judo, Volleyball and Gymnastics when she was a kid. What she is looking forward to most at LWC is meeting new friends, getting stronger mentally and physically, and always giving her best for the team because 'It's going to be a totally different environment from what I am used to, which is only more motivation for me.'"
