Doyle Lloyd, Branch Manager of Community Trust Bank, 1005 Jamestown Street in Columbia, is the closest business neighbor to the new Dairy Queen. He is pictured at the groundbreaking ceremony Friday, July 31, 2020. Even though the event was outdoors, everyone in attendance wore masks per the governor's recommendations to help curb the spread of the Coronavirus.

Local leaders welcome DQ management

At Friday's groundbreaking ceremony for the new Dairy Queen of Columbia, local leaders took turns after DQ managers lifted the first shovels. Retired educators Susan Shirley Chambers, left, and Carol Sullivan Perkins continue to share their own weekly radio show each Tuesday morning at 10amCT from their Edmonton, KY studio made possible by local sponsors. Carol & Susan Unscripted is on 99.1 FM for an hour filled with news, commentary, humor and entertainment. They got their start as radio DJs when they volunteered to take calls as a part of a Chamber of Commerce membership drive, and never looked back. The team has written books together and Carol's stories are a regular feature on ColumbiaMagazine.com.

By the end of the day Monday, August 3, 2020, both of the lots - the old Dickey's and the home behind it - were showing evidence of being cleared and ready for the new Cook Out Restaurant and back parking area to begin.

Cook Out restaurant is right on the heels of the new Dairy Queen progress. Cook Out is doing the site work tearing down the old Columbia DQ, most recently Dickie's BBQ closed for several years.
