Summer of Service at Family Resource Center

2021-06-29 - Adair County, KY - Photo from LWC Bonner Scholars.
Makayla Smith, at left, is doing her second Summer of Service with Mrs. Paula Garrison at the Adair County Primary Center Family Resource Center (FRC). MaKayla has been serving there since before she was a Bonner Scholar. This is their first time together all year, as MaKayla has been doing remote service, and it couldn't be at a better time since Paula is about to retire. MaKayla said she's loving everything about working with the FRC this summer, and that there's "never a dull moment between running reports, helping kids, supervising summer programming, and putting ice cream in the cooler instead of the freezer."

New Fairgrounds across from IMO

2021-06-29 - Adair County, KY - Photo from AC Fair.
Long term plans for the new Adair County Fairgrounds are to have at least one barn for cattle shows, one building for storage, a concession stand, announcers stand, and a couple of pavilions for pageants and picnics. The club is also wanting to work on getting the main track completed so the Fair Association can book events for the community. Plans are to bring the carnivals back once the track is up and running. Volunteers are needed now.

Scenic Adair County: New Columbia Sunset

2021-06-28 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Sunset reflecting onto the eastern sky above New Columbia. This is the way it looked for maybe two minutes. I looked down to see if the picture turned out and note the location, looked back up at the clouds and they'd already gone from fire to soft blues and grays. - LW

Kentucky Color: Honey Bee

2021-06-28 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
By Billy Joe Fudge

For several years, the demise of our precious Honey Bee has been quite obvious. Thankfully however, I'm seeing them more and more each year, now. This one was seen harvesting nectar from one of its favorite plants, White Clover, which can be seen in the picture.

White Clover was attacked by homeowners obsessed with the desire for monoculture lawns which came into vogue a few decades ago. Unfortunately this creates lawns devoid of the necessary plant diversity needed to support a healthy ecosystem. Of course, the exponential increased use of pesticides and herbicides is a huge contributing factor to the demise of many animal species.
