Monarch Migration 2021-09-30 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen. Cooler weather and shorter days in September tell the monarchs it's time to head for Mexico. According to the USDA, the monarch is the only butterfly known to make a two-way migration. Monarchs in Eastern North America have a second home in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico Last night, I noticed a butterfly high overhead, which isn't unusual, but then I saw another, and another.
