David Jones & Corey Thomas win 2018 Crappie USA Pro Division David Jones, Columbia, KY; and Corey Thomas, Jamestown, KY, take CUSA Pro Division Victory on Green River Lake; Chris Gupton, Campbellsville, KY; and Nathan Rhodes from Elkhorn, KY claim first place in the Amateur Division. From Crappie USA Louisville, KY - 3 Jun 2018 - Crappie anglers from several states traveled to Green River Lake, Columbia, KY to participate in a two-day Crappie USA (CUSA) tournament and wrap up the regular season. Local and traveling anglers fished for cash, prizes, and an opportunity to compete at the 2018 CUSA Classic which will feature a guaranteed payout of $125,000 in cash and prizes. Friday air temps reached into the 80s with clouds and 10-15 mph west winds. Saturday was a beautiful day with light winds, sunshine, and temps in the upper 80s. A personal best crappie weighing 3.36 was brought to the scales at Holmes Bend Marina & Resort to help boost the team into first place. It was also the biggest crappie to be weighed at a CUSA event this year. "What a fantastic way to end the spring season," said Darrell Van Vactor, General Manager of Crappie USA. "It was our largest turn out with 160 anglers from as far away as Colorado. We also weighed our largest fish of year with a 3.36-pound black crappie." A total of 78 boats fished the popular event, 22 in the Pro Division and 56 in the Amateur Division. A total of $15,000 was distributed to the winners. Pro Division Results zLifted by a 3.36-pound Green River Lake crappie, the team of David Jones and Corey Thomas brought 17.56 pounds to the scales to claim victory at Columbia, KY. A change of strategy on day two help them to the top. Jones, from Columbia, KY and Thomas, from Jamestown, KY fished mid lake in fairly deep water to earn $4,850. Their earnings included $3,000 for first place, $500 for the Talon Bonus, $1,000 for Big Fish, $250 for the Gamma Bonus, and $100 for the Jenko Bonus. Jones and Thomas were catching suspended fish using B'n'M poles. Their reels were spooled with 4-pound line. They used a combination of Jenko baits and double hook B'n'M live bait rigs. They reported that their best color was lemon lime/chartreuse. Crappies were plentiful. They caught about 125 fish during the weekend tournament. "We were one poling over structure," reported Jones. "The fish were coming from around 15-foot deep in 30 to 35 feet of water. The 3.36 was the biggest crappie I ever caught and it came on live bait." "The first day of the tournament we caught fish there but didn't go as deep," continued Jones. "On day two we went deeper and found the better fish." Jones thanked his sponsors stating, "I was using a B'n'M 7.5 Crappie Wizard Rod with 4-pound Gamma Panfish Line." Dale Thompson and Eddie Milby took the second-place spot. The Greensburg, KY team weighed 13 pounds and earned $2,700 that included $450 for Second Big Fish and $250 for the Ranger Cup Bonus. Thompson and Milby fished several different areas west of Holmes Bend. They were trolling blue/chrome crankbaits. They also reported numerous fish. They caught more than 175 fish over the weekend. "We had fish on all the time," said Thompson. "Sometimes we had 3 or 4 at the same time." The third-place spot went to Lynn and Nathan Cochran from Springfield, KY. They weighed 10.88 pounds and earned $1,000.00. Lynn and Nathan were casting jigs in 10 to 20 feet of water. They were using Big Bite Swimming Minnow jigs in various colors to catch more than 200 fish for the weekend. Fourth Place went to Paul, Joe and Will Aaron from Russell Springs, KY. Team Aaron weighed 10.51 pounds to claim their spot and earn $ 600.00 for their two days of fishing. They fished the area above Holmes Bend. They choose vertical jigging over cover and Monkey Milk colored jigs to catch their fish. They reported landing 50 to 60 fish for the weekend. Amateur Division Results Good numbers of fish continued for Amateur Division anglers. Chris Gupton, from Campbellsville, KY and Nathan Rhodes from Elkhorn, KY, claimed the top spot with 11.22 pounds and a check for $2,200.00. They caught a whopping total of 250 to 300 fish for the weekend. "Nathan and I split up this past week on practice," offered Gupton. "He fished Monday and Tuesday. I fished Wednesday and Thursday. We had some major storms roll through on Thursday night." "We were pulling crankbaits behind Offshore Tackle's new Awesome Crappie Mini Planer Boards," continued Gupton. "We fished our first spot for about an hour and only boated 1 fish so we went on to spot 2 which I had found on Wednesday." "We got set up and put the next 6 fish in the boat in 20 minutes. The fish we had been catching were really good fish. It's one of our better places in the summer. The fish tend to hang close to the river channel this time of year and when you get a bite it's usually the right bite. Friday was a tough bite but we were confident we would be in the top 10 at the end of day one." Day two came around and Gupton and Rhodes decided to stay with what worked on Friday. They got set up and put 7 fish in the boat in 40 minutes. "We had 3 really nice fish by 10:00," reported Gupton. "We elected to go weigh them. With temperatures forecast at 87 degrees we were afraid they might not make it until weigh-in. They weighed 2.18 pounds and assured us that we could pass our first days weight." Since their spot was getting a lot of weekend traffic they decided to go big fish hunting and returned to their original day one spot. They immediately put a 1.07 in the boat. They were catching good crappie with no one else in sight. "At one point we were throwing back 12-inch crappie," said Gupton. "By 2:30 we had the 4 we wanted." Gupton credited the win to the team's knowledge of trolling and a longtime history of fishing in open water. He also thanked his sponsors, Offshore Tackle, Starcraft Boats, and Hi-Tech Custom Painted Lures. "I have open water fished for walleyes on Lake Erie for 15 years," concluded Gupton. "Being a charter captain and spending a lot of time on the water makes it a lot easier to figure out what to do and when to do it." Terry Weber and Don Beasley brought the second-place weight to the scales. Weber, from Nicholasville, KY and Beasley from Lancaster, KY, weighed 10.72 pounds to earn their spot and $1,000.00. Vertical jigging proved to be productive for the Weber/Beasley team. They also used Gamma Pan Fish line to fish mid lake over cover. They reported that a variety of colors worked well for them. They caught more than 50 fish for the weekend. The third-place team of Dwayne Craig, from Cottontown, TN and Kyle Levering from White House, TN brought their Crappie Magnet jigs to town. They weighed 10.2 pounds of Green River Lake crappie to earn $700.00. Craig and Levering fished from mid lake to Robinson Creek. They reported various colors worked in 10 to 22 feet of water. Their vertical jigging produced around 200 crappies for the weekend. Fourth place went to Eric Kersey and Will Rogers. Kersey from Perryville, KY and Rogers from Harrodsburg KY broke the ten pound mark with 10.09 pounds. Their catch earned them $500.00. They chose to fish mid lake and north in 13 to 20 feet of water. They cast chartreuse jigs over cover to catch more than 150 fish in the two-day event. Wrapping up the top five was Gregory Oaks from Waynesburg, KY and Shane Yocum from Hustonville, KY. Their two-day weight of 9.73 pounds earned them $500.00. They reported fishing mid lake in the morning and then moving to the Holmes Bend area when the sun got higher. They found that Monkey Shine jigs worked best early. Oaks and Yocum changed to light color crankbaits from midday to afternoon when they started fishing 10 to 12 feet deep with the cranks to catch their fish. Epilogue Darrell Van Vactor, CUSA Operations Manager, delivered a special thank you to Sue Shivers and her staff at the Adair County CVB for hosting the event. He also thanked Joey and Kelly at Holmes Bend Marina for all their help and furnishing the weigh-in site for the weekend event. "I have told our anglers for the past few months that Green River Lake has become my new home lake," said Van Vactor. "Now they know why. What a fantastic fishery!"
