Lindsey Wilson Wrestling announces 2018-19 signing class

The 10 new wrestlers to the class join a pair of recent additions in Austin Gutknecht, a four-time Iowa state placer, and Trent Johnson, a John Hardin attendee that won the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) state championship at 145 pounds in 2018 and was recently awarded a Begley Scholarship at Lindsey Wilson.

COLUMBIA, KY - Lindsey Wilson wrestling head coach Corey Ruff has added 10 grapplers to his 2018-19 signing class for the upcoming season.

The class includes multiple state champions and placers, prospects from Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Alabama, Pennsylvania and Iowa, and features one transfer student-athlete.



The 10 new wrestlers to the class join a pair of recent additions in Austin Gutknecht, a four-time Iowa state placer, and Trent Johnson, a John Hardin attendee that won the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) state championship at 145 pounds in 2018 and was recently awarded a Begley Scholarship at Lindsey Wilson.

- Cagen Wallace is one of three state champions in the class and comes from Wayne County High School in Monticello, Kentucky where he owns a 214-13 career record with 127 pins to his name. He won the 2018 state title at 120 pounds with a 45-2 record and the 2017 title at 113 pounds with a perfect 57-0 mark. In 2016, he finished as the state runner-up at 106 pounds with a 55-1 record and placed fifth in the state competition at 106 pounds in 2015 with a 57-10 mark. He advanced to the round of 16 at FloNationals and the round of 12 at the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Junior Nationals in 2017, placing sixth at FloNationals in 2018 at 113 pounds. He is ranked 25th nationally for high school seniors at 120 pounds by Wrestling USA Magazine and boasts a 4.0 GPA in the top-10 of his graduating class.

- Derrick Smallwood comes from John Hardin High School in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. He owns a career record of 161-20. He recorded a 24-8 mark as an eighth grader and a 32-6 mark as a freshman, finishing in third place at 145 pounds at the state tournament competing for North Hardin High School. He returned to the mat as a junior for John Hardin where he posted a 54-4 record before a 51-2 mark his senior season en route to being ranked No. 1 at 160 pounds. Smallwood is a four-time state qualifier, finishing in third place as a freshman before winning the competition as a senior. He owns a pair of state invitational tournament victories along with being a member of the Kentucky State National Duals Team in 2017 where he posted an 8-0 record to earn All-American honors. At the national level, he owns a number of top-three finishes at prominent competitions including the NHSCA, the Indiana Mat Hoosier Preseason Open, the Michigan Grappler Fall Classic and the Super 32 Challenge. Smallwood owns wins over nationally top-10 ranked opponents and finished fourth at FloNationals at 152 pounds in 2018 and was a Beast of the East participant at 160 pounds in 2017.

- Seth Dupree comes to Lindsey Wilson from Bob Jones High School in Madison, Alabama. Dupree is a four-time state qualifier and two-time state placer, finishing as the state runner-up and adding a third-place finish. He owns a 74-11 record during his junior and senior seasons and has qualified for the Super 32 Challenge and posted a 4-2 record at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Dupree is expected to compete at the heavyweight class for the Blue Raiders.

- Blake Roth comes from Walton-Verona High School where he posted a 165-50 record from his eighth grade to senior season. He is a four-time KHSAA state placer, taking eighth at 106 pounds in 2015, seventh at 106 in 2016, fifth at 120 in 2017 and third at 138 pounds in 2018. He is a five-time regional placer, winning the Region 6 championship in 2016 and 2018 and finishing as the runner up in 2015 and 2017. Roth has been ranked No. 3 in the state all season long, including posting a 35-5 record in 2018 with 24 pins. Of his five losses, three have come against top-six ranked wrestlers from Ohio in tight battles, and two came against state champion Saul Ervin from Union County High School. He has strong showings and placements at a collection of prominent tournaments and posted a 3-2 mark at the 2017 FloNationals, advancing to the round of 12 at NHSCA Junior Nationals.

- Trevor Lawson joins Lindsey Wilson from Olentangy Liberty High School in Powell, Ohio where he collected a 135-14 record during three seasons. He is ranked 14th or better nationally at 182 pounds by Intermat, The Open Mat and FloWrestling. The two-time Ohio Division I state finalist has finished third or better in the Division I OHSAA competition for three-consecutive years, was the Brecksville Tournament champion, and is a three-time place-winner at the prestigious Ironman Tournament hosted by Walsh Jesuit. He is expected to compete for the Blue Raiders at 184 pounds.

- Cameron Ward comes to Lindsey Wilson from St. Xavier High School in Louisville and is expected to compete at 165 pounds. He owns a 98-34 three-year record on the mat and has seen a slew of success at the state tournament including qualifying for the competition at 152 pounds in 2016, finishing as the state runner-up at 160 pounds in 2017 and placing third at 170 pounds in 2018. He is also a 2016 state freestyle champion and was the Region 4 champion in both 2017 and 2018.

- Alex Caldwell comes from Ligonier Valley High School in Pennsylvania where he owns a 106-38 career record, including a 26-2 mark during his senior campaign. He ranks third in school history on the all-time wins list and was named to the 2017 all-state team after placing fifth at 138 pounds. Caldwell is a three-time all-conference honoree, a three-time district place-winner and was the 2018 district champion. He was named an all-star at the Pennsylvania vs. Maryland/West Virginia Border Brawl, advanced to the round of 12 at FloNatioanls at 145 pounds and currently ranks No. 5 in Pennsylvania.

- Tanner DeMien joins the Blue Raiders from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana where he was a four-time state qualifier with a 141-27 record. He is also a four-time conference champ, sectional champ, and semi-state place-winner. DeMien won the regional title three times, captured seventh place at the state competition in 2015 and was named a 2017 Disney Duals All-American. He is expected to compete at 125 pounds for the Blue Raiders.

- Anthony Kennedy comes from Louisville Central High School where he posted a 26-20 record during his senior campaign, finishing one spot shy of qualifying for the KHSAA State Tournament. A 4.0 student, Kennedy is projected to wrestle at 184 pounds.

- Latrell Davis is the lone transfer of the group, coming to Lindsey Wilson from Cleveland State University in Ohio. He previously wrestled for Middletown High School in Ohio where he was a two-time state qualifier with a 131-26 record. He went 11-10 in his first season at Cleveland State, following with a 16-9 sophomore campaign with a sixth-place finish at the Binghamton Open, a fifth place at the Cleveland Sate Open and finishing fourth at the conference tournament. He is expected to compete at 149 pounds for the Blue Raiders.
