LWC Student-Athletes honored at Awards Ceremony

By Christopher Coombs

Lindsey Wilson College athletics honored its student-athletes on Tuesday night at the third-annual LWC Athletics Awards Ceremony held at V.P. Henry Auditorium.

Team and individual awards were presented along with recognition of the Mid-South Conference Champions of Character recipients, NAIA All-Americans and NAIA Scholar Athletes.

The night concluded with the presentation of the Mid-South Conference President's Cup. Conference officials announced earlier in the day that Lindsey Wilson had retained the Cup for a seventh consecutive year.

"It is always a pleasure to recognize our outstanding student athletes for their excellence in competition and in the classroom," Lindsey Wilson athletics director Willis Pooler said. "Tonight was a fantastic night. Congratulations to all the award winners."

Nominations for each award came from the LWC athletic administration and coaches. A vote by a committee consisting of members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and athletics' administration provided the finalists and ultimately the winner of each category.

Lindsey Wilson Football's Zac Lawson was named the Male Scholar-Athlete, while Volleyball's Makenzie Montano was named the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is given to a student-athlete who shows exemplary academic and athletic achievement throughout their Lindsey Wilson career.

Wrestling's Cam Tessari was named the Male Student-Athlete of the Year after finishing as national champion at 149-pounds. Volleyball's Montano was named Female Student-Athlete of the Year as she was named NAIA Volleyball Player of the Year and the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Both Tessari and Montano were also named Male and Female Seniors of the Year for their accomplishments, respectively.

The Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to the student-athlete who demonstrates the most outstanding athletic achievement throughout the duration of their season.

Women Swimming's Caroline Cobb was named the Champions of Character Award recipient. The award is given to the individual who exhibits academic and athletic achievement, campus and community leadership, future ambition and embraces the five core character values of the NAIA.

Male and Female Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors of the Year were also announced.

Men Tennis's Camilo Erazo was named Male Freshman of the Year while Volleyball's Paulina Sobolewska received female honors. The duo was both named conference Freshman of the Year in their sport.

Cycling's Dustin Hammond took Male Sophomore of the Year honors while Swimming's Alexis Kessler was named Female Sophomore of the Year. Both sophomores won Individual National Championships in their respective sports.

Kessler also picked up the Best Performance by a Female Student Athlete for her three NAIA National Championship individual titles this year. She earned NAIA All-American honors in seven different events - Three individual races and four relays.

Kevin Hallmon and Grace Blomstedt took home Male and Female Junior of the Year honors, respectively.

Hallmon earned NAIA Indoor Track & Field All American honors for both the 60 and 200 meters. He also earned a pair of First Team All MSC honors at the Outdoor Conference Championships helping the Blue Raiders capture the title. Blomstedt earned Second-Team All-American and First-Team All Mid-South honors. She led the nation in hitting percentage at .463 and was seventh in blocks per set helping LWC win the MSC regular season, MSC Tournament and NAIA National Championship.

Wrestling's Tessari earned Best Performance by a Male Student-Athlete after his run at the Wrestling National Championships. Tessari wrestled at 149-pounds and won the program sixth ever individual national title after going a perfect 5-0 at the NAIA National Championship

The Volleyball team won the Best Team Performance after finishing the season with a perfect 35-0 record and won the programs first national title at the 2017 NAIA National Tournament. Lindsey Wilson won 21 of 25 sets during the tournament while beating six nationally-ranked teams.

A number of annual awards, including Team of the Year, Team Community Service Award, Team GPA and Coach of the Year, have been pushed back to a summer announcement to allow for the completion of the entire 2017-18 athletic and academic year.
