Lindsay Daniel, Russell Springs, named Newman Civic Fellow Daniel says her passion for helping underprivileged children have access to education comes from personal experience. (Fri 23 Mar 2018) Lindsey Wilson College junior Lindsay Daniel, was recently named a 2018 Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow. Daniel, a human services & counseling and communication junior from Russell Springs, KY, is a student leader on campus. She is a part of the Bonner Scholars Program at LWC where she has served over 1,120 hours within the local school systems. And she has served with Upward Bound, a program designed to prepare high-risk and first-generation high school students for collegiate success. The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year fellowship for college students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country and abroad. "During her time with Upward Bound, Lindsay built and facilitated curriculum to encourage the students with whom she worked to not only excel academically but also to begin understanding and exploring social justice issues and policy in order to connect their academics with real-world applications," said LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. "Lindsay works every day through various campus and community organizations to promote access to education and collegiate success." Daniel says her passion for helping underprivileged children have access to education comes from personal experience. "I relate to these students in a way that professionals may not be able to because I was once that at-risk child," said Daniel, "College was never mandatory or expected of my siblings and me but I knew that I could foster change and develop skills that would help me to excel in a specific discipline despite the lack of understanding or support that I received from home." "Through the obstacles I have encountered while paving my way as a first-generation college student, I hope I have been able to encourage and inspire others to believe that they are capable of breaking the stigma and overcoming the challenges that come with pursuing a college degree." The fellowship provides students with a variety of learning and networking opportunities as well as with access to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities. Daniel is one of 268 students who will make up the 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate and engage with such an extraordinary group of students," said Campus Compact President Andrew Seligsohn. "The stories of this year's Newman Civic Fellows make clear that they are bringing people together in their communities to solve pressing problems.
