Family and friends gather for Ruth Butler's 95 birthday By Chris Lagermann On Friday, March 2, 2018 Ruth Sewell Butler celebrated her 95th birthday with a large group of friends and family at the Old School Cafe in Edmonton, KY. Ruth's family includes her brother Gene Sewell; son Tez Butler, granddaughters Heather, Heidi and Holly Coleman, and Holly's sons Coleman and Cabot Boling. Ruth's daughter Connie Coleman, passed away on July 23, 2016. Mrs. Butler is the widow of Ralph Cortez Butler and they both taught in the Metcalfe County School system and were well-respected and loved by their many former students. Ruth and Cortez were married for 68 years. They attended Lindsey Wilson College together until Cortez left to serve as a Naval officer and pilot in World War II. Ruth and her brother Gene's family home "Waterview" is in Marrowbone, KY. Gene still owns this beautiful old homestead. Cortez finished his education at Tennessee Tech after World War II and taught at Marrowbone High School. He moved his family to Metcalfe County where he spent many years as a teacher, guidance counselor and basketball coach at Metcalfe County High School while Ruth taught in the elementary school. Ruth Butler has been honored by the Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce with the Jim C. Coleman Award for Community Service (named for Ruth's son-in-law Jim Coleman) and the 2016 Educator Idol Award. (The Educator Idol is a person who has been a great influence during their teaching career in the Metcalfe County Schools.) Ruth is an active member of Edmonton United Methodist Church. An old friend of Ruth and Cortez, Mr. Lee Robertson and his son Steve came to honor Ruth. Lee is the former golf coach at Western Kentucky University and is also 95 years "young"! Ruth was very pleased to have so many people come and celebrate with her on this special occasion. She appreciated all the kind words and beautiful cards and the opportunity to visit with old friends. Submitted by: Chris Lagermann.
