Joyce Coomer: Thoughts on safer crossing on Burkesville Street

Perhaps some rumble strips would help shake drivers out of automatic pilot mode

By Joyce Coomer
Personal Commentary

I drove down Guardian Street a few minutes ago and while waiting for a break in Burkesville Street traffic so I could go toward the courthouse, I was watching traffic patterns.

It's a downhill run from just past the Masonic lodge to the courthouse and people don't always notice how much faster their vehicle will be going in that area. Add in the wider street and they notice increased speed even less.

Perhaps some rumble strips 100 ft. or so on either side of both churches on Burkesville Street, in both lanes of traffic, would help. The noise tires make when going across rumble strips should shake drivers out of automatic pilot mode and cause them to notice things around them. Joyce M. Coomer
