Amelia McGough sends thank you to AC Fire Dept., others House fire occurred as family was returning to Columbia after several years away. A number of individuals, businesses, and groups have stepped in to help the McGough's get back on their feet. Related: Comments re article 91530 AC Fire Department battles fire but house is total loss By Amelia McGough Just want to say "thank you" to the fire department; we were at the Best Western after a long drive from Texas, planning to move in the next day, which is why you couldn't find us. We had just returned home after several years away, looking forward so much to moving into the house again. We drove up Saturday morning to find it still smouldering. Red Cross will not help since we were not living in the house when the lightning hit, so we are making it one day at a time. Jeffries, Betty's, and several others have been kind enough to work with us and help out. Columbia is home for us and we are glad to be home, despite the circumstances. We need help with plumbing and electric -- everything was on the house [that burned] and will have to be re-routed. John is in end stage cardiomyopathy and can't do it anymore. Also thanks so much to Sugarfoot Rescue for taking our dogs until we can get a pen or fence up, Best Western for the reduced rate, and 3-Trees Church for bringing us some emergency groceries and another night's stay. Your kindness overwhelms us and we are deeply grateful. - Amelia McGough This story was posted on 2017-07-10 13:03:31
